Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menggali informasi mengenai populasi dan kondisi Tikus Air Sulawesi (Waiomys mamasae) berdasarkan perspektif etnozoologi di lima desa penyangga Taman Nasional Gandang Dewata (TNGD), Sulawesi Barat. Dengan menggunakan teknik cluster sampling, sebanyak 66 responden dari berbagai profesi yang memiliki interaksi langsung dengan ekosistem sungai dipilih, termasuk pemburu, pekebun, dan individu lain yang sering beraktivitas di sekitar area sungai. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara menggunakan kuesioner untuk memperoleh informasi tentang frekuensi penampakan spesies ini, serta pemanfaatannya dalam kehidupan masyarakat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 50% responden pernah melihat langsung Tikus Air Sulawesi, sementara sisanya tidak. Dalam hal pemanfaatan, masyarakat memanfaatkan spesies ini sebagai azimat pelindung rumah dari kebakaran, obat tradisional, dan konsumsi. Beberapa kepercayaan lokal juga menyebutkan kemampuan unik spesies ini, seperti berjalan di atas air atau tahan saat menyelam. Sebaran usia responden didominasi oleh kelompok usia 35–48 tahun (32%), diikuti oleh kelompok usia lainnya. Penelitian ini memberikan gambaran tentang pengetahuan lokal dan hubungan masyarakat dengan W. mamasae, yang dapat menjadi dasar penting untuk upaya konservasi dan pengelolaan ekosistem sungai di kawasan TNGD. Selain itu, hasil ini juga berpotensi digunakan sebagai bahan edukasi dan referensi dalam pembelajaran biologi.
This study aims to explore information on the population and condition of the Sulawesi Water Rat (Waiomys mamasae) based on an ethnozoological perspective in five buffer villages of Gandang Dewata National Park (TNGD), West Sulawesi. Using the cluster sampling technique, 66 respondents from various professions who have direct interaction with the river ecosystem were selected, including hunters, gardeners, and other individuals who often do activities around the river area. Data were collected through interviews using questionnaires to obtain information on the frequency of sightings of this species, behavior, population changes, and its use in people's lives. The results showed that 50% of respondents had seen the Sulawesi Water Rat directly, while the rest had not. In terms of utilization, people use this species as a talisman to protect their homes from fire, traditional medicine, and consumption. Some local beliefs also mention the unique abilities of this species, such as walking on water or being able to survive while diving. The age distribution of respondents is dominated by the 35–48 year old age group (32%), followed by other age groups. This study provides an overview of local knowledge and community relationships with W. mamasae, which can be an important basis for conservation efforts and management of river ecosystems in the TNGD area. In addition, these results also have the potential to be used as educational materials and references in biology learning.
