ABSTRAK
DEA RAMADHANI SAFITRI: The Effect of the Problem Based Learning
Model on the Conceptual Understanding Ability of Grade IX Students at SMP
Negeri 4 Majene. Undergraduate Thesis. Majene: Faculty of Teacher Training
and Education, Universitas Sulawesi Barat, 2025.
This study aims to determine the effect of using the Problem Based Learning
model on students’ mathematical concept understanding. Specifically, it
examines whether students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics is higher
after being taught using the Problem Based Learning model compared to before
its implementation. This research employed a quantitative approach with a one�group pretest-posttest design. The sample was selected using a random sampling
technique, with all students of classes IX A and IX C at SMP Negeri 4 Majene
serving as research subjects. The research instruments consisted of teacher
learning implementation observation sheets, student activity observation sheets,
and a conceptual understanding test to measure students’ mathematical concept
comprehension. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and
inferential statistical techniques. The descriptive analysis showed that the average
score of students’ mathematical concept understanding after the implementation
of the Problem Based Learning model was in the very high category, while prior
to the implementation, it was in the medium category. Furthermore, inferential
analysis using the Independent Sample T-Test revealed a significant difference in
students’ conceptual understanding before and after the learning intervention,
with a t-value of 5.432 and a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05. These findings indicate that
the application of the Problem Based Learning model has a positive effect and is
effective in improving students’ mathematical concept understanding.
